"Let's Eat Strawberry Shortcake"
SUNNYSIDE UP MOMENT - MAY 9, 2020
DAY FIFTY-FOUR OF THE CORONAVIRUS QUARANTINE FOR US AT STACK 'EM HIGH PANCAKES AND SO FORTH
As we start to crawl out of our hobbit holes, of course we are glad to see a light ahead. Even propping the door open an inch lets in just enough wind of change to lift our heavy spirits. And peeking out like the Poky Little Puppy who wanted to go for a walk in the “wide, wide world,” sends a collective shiver of excitement down our spines. But if you remember the Little Golden Book, the restless and impetuous puppy followed his curiosity at all cost and ignored the signs warning him not to dig holes under the fence. The Poky Little Puppy’s wayward actions were constantly instigating the other pups to follow him down the hill “roly-poly, pell-mell, tumble-bumble.” In the end, the other little puppies tempered their zeal for adventure with caution and were rewarded with strawberry shortcake for dinner. But the Poky Little Puppy’s seemingly harmless shenanigans sent him to bed “without a single bite of shortcake and feeling very sorry for himself.”
The next couple of weeks will most likely dictate our just deserts. I am hopeful we will balance our eagerness to move forward with prudence and discretion. I am hopeful we will take into consideration the trials and struggles taking place in other hobbit holes. We have the power to write the next chapter of this narrative. The dramatic end doesn’t have to invoke “let them eat cake.” The moral of our story can be brought to life with illustrations of happy and healthy brethren sharing a bit of strawberry shortcake, feeling very content and proud of themselves.
